A haiku a day...

Friday
Between showers we
climb up through the trees, onto
sunny spring moorland.

Saturday
Deer with a deathwish,
we swerve, he bounds away free,
into the morning.

Sunday
Breathing carefully
defeats all fears of flying,
inhale, exhale, float.

Monday
Pounding the pavements,
through puddles and relentless
pouring rain: perfect.

Tuesday
Blank page tyranny,
word documents multiply,
elusive progress.

Wednesday
Playful gusts of wind
transform my skirt into a
billowy landscape.

Thursday
The first seedling peeks
its leaves up out of the soil:
fragile alchemy.

Badger of the week (5)

Inspired by the design of a lovely skirt made for me by a friend, and my love of woodland creatures, I got the old sewing machine out last weekend and stitched up this crazy beauty...

I didn't have a pattern, it's just a long panel of fabric folded in half. The waistband is done using a thick piece of elastic - I measured the length by holding it around my waist and finding where it was comfortable. Then the top of the fabric is folded over and stitched down, making a sort of tube which the elastic gets threaded through. Then the ends of the elastic get stitched together, then the sides of the skirt are stitched and the bottom hemmed. And that's it - an easy peasy sewing project that took less than an hour to complete!

So where's this week's badger? Here! sneaking out from behind some berries, near a giant ladybird!

There are actually 2 badgers altogether as well as squirrels, deer, foxes, rabbits, butterflies, birds, raccoons, and more. I also stitched on this little heart shaped patch that I've had sitting in my sewing box for years, waiting for the right project...

And here's what it looks like on (excuse the slightly awkward pose). It's really comfortable, and because of the elastic waist, can be worn in different ways, high up on the waist or low on the hips!

A happy badger sewing project :) What have you been making lately, badger themed or otherwise?!

A haiku a day...

Friday
Alone on the beach,
Just me and the sea, pounding
along the shoreline.

Saturday
One face looks forward,
one behind, but i'm still blind,
to present dangers.

Sunday
In a dark place here,
shed a tear for auld lang syne,
unhappy new year.

Monday
Twilight once again,
right on time, down by the bridge,
cautious deer emerge.

Tuesday
Outside a storm brews,
invisible angry winds,
hold us hostage here.

Wednesday
Sunrise streaks beside
Scottish shores, pink light dances,
fluorescent magic.

Thursday
I pitter patter
all about our happy flat,
Home sweet home is here.

A haiku a day....

I'm still busy hibernating so I'll let the haikus do the talking...

Friday
It's still night time when
we awake, as I drift off,
you fly far away.

Saturday
Presentation's all,
Fold up the pretty paper,
Wrap it all in ribbons.

Sunday
It's Christmas once again,
A day like no other day,
Magic fills the air.

Monday
Mad starlings flock here,
as day meets it end they swoop
and circle like one.

Tuesday
Up above the clouds...
(Landscapes of condensation,
That make my ears pop).

Wednesday
Gale force winds ruffle
Feathers on the blue tit's head,
As he pecks his lunch.

Thursday
Twilight cloaks the world,
A deer peers out, silent, still,
Disguised as a tree.

A haiku a day...

We're deep in mid winter now, so it's high time for hibernating. I've swapped London's busy streets for quiet hills and forests deep in the Devon countryside. Days are spent sleeping late, reading Murakami's latest offering, IQ84 (it's a real page turner!) eating a lot, and walking off the food on long walks. Some new discoveries have been made including deer in the woods and a kingfisher flying past by the river. Here are these tales and more in haiku form...

Friday
Cold air fills my lungs,
Muddy puddles soak my feet.
Winter seeps inside.

Saturday
I blaze a path through

bustling crowds busy buying
Christmas bits and bobs.

Sunday

A nostalgic song,
a sepia coloured sky,
visions of the past.

Monday

Two deer bound away

on the strangely green carpet,

magic mossy scene.

Tuesday
Cobble stones, twinkling

lights, a little town bursting

with countryside charm.

Wednesday
Elusive vision,
a turquoise arrow darts past,
Shy kingfisher bird.

Thursday
A river so long,
flows over gnarly tree roots,
a fleeting meeting.

Season's greetings. May you have a very merry Christmas :)

A haiku a day...

It's been a bit of a quiet week for me on here as I spent last weekend away in the far reaches of Scotland and have been trying to catch up on work and sleep ever since I got back. Despite the lack of any other words on these here pages, I have a few extra haikus this week as Sunday was a very long and inspiring day spent walking along a beautiful Scottish beach. I spotted oystercatchers and black-headed gulls galore, picnic-ed on a cliff-side over-looking a secret bay, skipped around at the waves' edge like an excited child, collected shells and feathers, admired the pretty boats bobbing in the harbour, managed not to get blown away in the wind, stared in awe at some nutter kite-surfing on the wild waves, walked through a yellowing forest at sunset, spotted some deer on the horizon, sat in the prettiest, cosiest summerhouse in all the land admiring the many trinkets which adorn its ceilings, walls and windows and keeping warm by the light of many candles and blankets, stroked a beautiful cat, played scrabble and ate my weight in macaroni cheese. I couldn't limit all that inspiration into just seventeen syllables or even just words, so here are my haikus and some photos to accompany. Enjoy...

Friday

Sunrise, train ride (slow)
Grey rainy streets of Glasgow,
Later the drinks flow.

Saturday
A glimpse of a fox,
As the train zooms through hayfields,
Sly sunset surprise.

Sunday
(i)
Blustery beach walk
Sea spray, sandy shoes, footprints
tracing our escape.

(ii)
A sudden flurry
Of black-headed gulls, flapping
up, surrounding us.

(iii)
On the horizon,
leaping deer: grace incarnate
as they disappear.

Monday
All day on a train,
Sorry to complain but its
driving me insane.

Tuesday
Rainy afternoon,
I batten down the hatches,
Hide my face away.

Wednesday
Songs rise up, filling
the room, taking my thoughts on
a dreamy journey.

Thursday
The sky is grey, wet,
the light muted, I forget
long
summer mornings.

Upon returning home, seeing this quote made me smile....

"For whatever we lose (like a you or a me),
It's always our self we find in the sea..."
~ e.e. Cummings

I'll be back next week with more haikus and hopefully some sewing/crochet/crafty projects to share.
Enjoy your weekend - may it be full of autumn leaves, warm soups, cardigans, a good book, some nature, smiles and dreaming...
