A haiku a day...

Friday
Soil, seeds and pots,
we gather them all ready
for window box joy.

Saturday
Patchwork of roof tiles,
Bright sunlight; in the distance
vines are waking up

Sunday
Impromptu concert
drifts up through my window, strange
jazz rhythms, lets dance!

Monday
Boughs laden with blooms,
Peek out between market stalls,
nature meets culture.

Tuesday
My limbs are heavy,
my thoughts dulled, sleep calls me back,
dark, empty and strange,

Wednesday
Lemon, honey, thyme
infused together, fragrant
fight against the germs.

Thursday
Lovely lilac bush,
Impossible to capture
its
delicate scent.

A haiku a day...

Friday
Lost in translation,
so we give up, sip beer and
enjoy life in France.

Saturday
Booming fireworks,
bright lights, river reflections,
explosive welcome.

Sunday
Dimanche en France, so
let's amble to market, rain
can't dampen my day.

Monday
Two new friends for me
outside the épicerie;
chat et coccinelle.

Tuesday
After wine and cheese,
talk turns to tortoises, what
strange little creatures.

Wednesday
Furniture failure,
bureaucracy at the bank,
wednesday blues mean beer.

Thursday
All day long shivers
dart up and down my spine, cold
creeps into my bones.

Ummmm, re-reading this weeks haikuus as I type has made me realise that there are quite a lot of references to wine and beer! haha! Next week I will try and be more sober in my poetry. Lets just say a wee drink every now and then has been helping smooth the transition into France when our attempts to find cheap furniture have repeatedly met with failure....

A haiku a day...

I've been writing these little haikus every day for over 6 months now, which is quite hard to believe as I'm usually rubbish at sticking to things like this. I doubt that anybody else really enjoys reading them, but the weekly ritual of typing them and putting them on here has certainly helped me to keep on writing them. I love how they capture random little snippets of things, like the changing seasons, weird little observations I've had during my days, pretty flowers, frustrated moments, dreams, runs in the rain, snow, autumn etc. It's funny sometimes the way that inspiration strikes me and I think - ooh! that's definitely the subject of my haiku today! Maybe at the end of a year's worth I will print them all out in a little book and it will be one of the most concise and yet strangely evocative diaries I've ever kept. Anyway, here's this week's worth, served up this time with a healthy sprinkling of snow....

Friday
On this cold night we
shut out the world and sip wine,
convivially.

Saturday
Creaky snow footsteps
through a freshly coated world,
a blank page tonight.

Sunday
Confused birds singing
at street light reflections on
snow: a fake dawn glow.

Monday
Drip drop, melting snow,
the great thaw's started, perhaps
Aslan's on the move?

Tuesday
Treacherous pathway,
Snow sparkles a warning that
I'm running on ice.

Wednesday
A nun, a ginger
beard, school children, you and me,
huddled on the tube.

Thursday
I'll miss the way that
Distant trains sound strange at night,
like boiling kettles.

ps. If anybody is reading, I invite you to leave a haiku of your own in the comments :)

A haiku a day...

Another busy few days here, so just my little haikus again this week. But it's a neat little collection I think - all my non-work based inspiration has been squeezed into these lines. Anyway, hope you enjoy....

Friday
The room sways, we stay,
Pour another glass, laugh, and
devour all the cheese.

Saturday
Hillful of strangers,
gathered to watch explosions,
huddled in the mist.

Sunday
We sleep on, morning
passes us by, are we lazy
or busy dreaming?

Monday
Dazed pigeons coo,
they
peck the ground in unison:
feathery robots

Tuesday
Afternoon fades out,
the skyline vanishes as
night falls on London.

Wednesday
After nightmares, blind
panic floats away at last,
clarity descends.

Thursday
Squirrels stop to watch
the hula hooping girl twirl,
Slow motion park scene.

A haiku a day...

Friday
A bottle of red:
Conversation flows just like
Old times at wine time.

Saturday
It's loud and hot here
and not like me, but on the
dancefloor I feel free.

Sunday
Sunday sunflowers:
My arms full of their long stems
and happy faces.

Monday
Reading means doubling
my '"me": I'm here and I'm there,
inside the pages.

Tuesday
All at once the birds
take to flight, united in
wingéd commotion.

Wednesday
Outside a strange voice
sings; a melodic breeze floats
in through my window.

Thursday
Almost October,
but Summer has snuck back for
one last brazen fling.

Thanks for reading my little ones. I just looked back through my old haiku posts and realised that I have already written another haiku about sunflowers which I had completely forgotten about. Reading it again I remember exactly the moment that inspired the first one :) So it turns out they are not just poems but also magic potions for the memory: take/make one a day and remember little moments that would otherwise be lost. Writing a haiku really is a fun way to capture a little bit of the essence of your day... why not leave me one in the comments?
